![]() Maestro Jack continues to lead the charge with his great piano and vocals, Joe rips it up every time with his Stratocaster riffs and vocals, Tom Lillis continues to amaze with his cool bass riffs and Mike just keeps banging out a great sound ( with occasional help from Mike Jr). We’re also happy that Willie has added some new instruments to his musical arsenal, including a nearly 100-year-old mandolin and a brand new red, 12-string Rickenbacker guitar. I am planning a sequel to my “Simple Matter of Twang” CD, which will feature some under-the-radar country classics and a couple of originals. Under a tent, Play Captain Kiarah Cropper-Stukes conducted a drawing activity with 8-year-old Elik.The Kensingtons are in the midst of a great year of playing music, having just done gigs at Earl’s ( 6th Annual Venture Riders Rally), Larkinville (5th year) and at our monthly musical home, Sportsmen’s Tavern. Off to the side of the grassed area stood a group of Play Captains in their now signature red shirts playing with children who came out to the park. They’re paid throughout the summer to be leaders for a neighborhood going through heightened gun violence and crime. Teens, some as young as 14, apply to work Playstreets or Playpark events. The nonprofit organization does programming throughout the year in partnership with other groups but the most popular program is the Play Captains. While the sun was sweltering, it looked like it barely fazed the young kids as they challenged each other to do tricks and the latest dance crazes. On Tuesday afternoon the executive director and founder of Fab Youth Philly danced to “Wobble” with neighborhood kids at McPherson park outside of the McPherson Square Library. Rebecca Fabiano has to strike a delicate balance between protecting her teen workers and providing a space for Kensington’s children to just be kids.
